ARTIST STATEMENT
Maria-Teodora Pîrjol (b.2005 Iasi, Romania) is a multidisciplinary artist that currently lives and studies in Leeds, United Kingdom. Drawing from her cultural heritage, personal memories and the broader experience of women around the world, her work questions the foundations of patriarchy and the development of gender definitions and pressures that come as a result of this system throughout history. Alternating between painting, sculpture, photography and video, she positions the body into fluid spaces that challenge social and political perceptions of 'womanhood', and tries to open conversations about the possibility of escaping male/female categories that have been created of an oppressive system which she believes is designed to divide us. Her compositions transfer complex emotions and ideas into material form through the use of symbolic imagery, textures and vivid colours. It is the same case for her video work, which combines struggle, chaos and heavy sensory detail with ethereal ambiances and scenes.
